KU Baseball: Kansas Wins Series; Falls to St. Thomas in Series Finale

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas baseball won the first three games of the series against St. Thomas before dropping the series finale 13-2 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.

    HOW IT HAPPENED
    • St. Thomas (3-12) grabbed the lead first for a fourth consecutive day. The Tommies plated two runs in the second inning on an RBI double and RBI single.
    • That lead stretched to 4-0 with a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth for St. Thomas.
    • Kansas (10-5) was able to get its lone hit and first run in the bottom of the sixth. Brady Ballinger hit a triple off the batter’s eye to start the inning and Tyson LeBlanc brought him home on an RBI groundout. That made it a 4-1 game.
    • St. Thomas took control of the game with a six-run seventh inning. Four run-scoring hits stretched it to a 10-1 St. Thomas lead.
    • Three more runs crossed the plate for the Tommies in the eighth to make it 13-1 and put the run rule into effect.
    • The Jayhawks did score one run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Cade Baldridge.

    QUOTABLES & NOTABLES
“Obviously an ugly, ugly game. The box score takes care of itself when you get one hit and give up 15. I think the first time through the order for us we had one punch out, so I actually thought the approach was pretty good. Then, we just completely abandoned the plan offensively and on the mound once we got punched in the mouth a couple times. Great opportunity for us to learn, or I should say it is an opportunity for us to learn. We need to take advantage of it because obviously it gets a lot harder from here.” – Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald

    • Kansas dropped to 10-5 overall on the season.
    • Ballinger hit his first triple of the season.

    UP NEXT
Kansas will hit the road again for a week in the state of Texas. The Jayhawks will play TCU in a non-conference midweek game on Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. CT, before heading to Texas Tech to begin conference play.
